How To Make Your Own Leather Wallet
Have you been thinking about buying a new wallet but simply don’t want to fork out the money to pay for a new one? Here is a simple guide that will teach you how to make your own leather wallet.
1. Materials
If you’re lucky enough to have the right materials laying around the house, then you can save on the cost of buying material for your wallet. Perhaps you’re an avid crafter who loves sewing and has a variety of materials laying around in your sewing room. If you have some leather material and an assortment of other cloth materials, then you’re in luck.
You can also purchase the materials that you need for fairly cheap at your local crafting store, so this is always an option if you simply don’t have enough material at home.
What you’ll need is about a 1 square foot piece of leather, and another 1 square foot piece of another material like a polyester or a similar material. The polyester piece of material will be used to make the cloth dividers inside the wallet.
2. Cutting Out The Pieces
Once you have the materials that you need to make your wallet, then you’ll want to cut the pieces to suit so that you can so them together. We’re going to make a tri-fold wallet so you’ll want to make each of the pieces roughly 4 inches wide by 9 Inches Long. Cut two leather pieces and two cloth pieces according to those measurements.
3. Lay Out The Material
Once you have the pieces all cut out and exactly the same size, then it’s time to lay them out so you can sew them together.
First, take one piece of leather and lay it out flat.
Next, take a piece of the cloth material and lay it directly on top of the leather material, and then lay the other piece of cloth material on top of that.
Finally, lay the remaining piece of leather material on top of the other three pieces so that you essentially have four pieces of material sandwiched together. Remember, all pieces should be the exact same size so trim any excess material that needs to be trimmed in order to make them all the exact same size.
4. Sew It All Together
When you have all of the material pieces properly lined up, then it’s time to sew them all together. Remember, you’re only going to be sewing three sides together because you want to leave one of the long edges open. This is where you will be able to put things into the compartments of the wallet.
You’ll need a fairly tough needle and some thick thread to sew the materials together. Because the materials can be quite thick when they are stacked together, it may be difficult to sew all of them together at once. Instead, consider sewing two together at a time, adding the others once you are completed.
Start the needle and thread in one corner of the material on a short side of the pieces. Work your way down the side of the material, securely sewing the pieces together while making sure that they remain aligned. When the side is complete, round the corner and then sew the long side of the wallet materials together. By this time you will two sides sewn together, a short side and a long side. Round the final corner and sew the remaining short side together. You will have the three sides sewn together at this point.
If you opted to sew one or two pieces together at a time to make it easier, then you will have to repeat the steps above with the other remaining pieces. Remember to sew them in the proper order which is leather piece, cloth piece, cloth piece, leather piece. When you’re finished, you will have made your very own leather wallet.
