Grand Canyon South Rim Bus Tour Trip Report
Undoubtedly one of the most popular Grand Canyon bus trip is the one that leaves from Vegas and goes to the South Rim. I purchased one of these tours for $80 and it didn’t disappoint. Here’s my trip analysis:
I’ve got to say this is one of several excursions to the canyon for less than $100. It’s all-inclusive and comes with free hotel pick up and drop off, lunch, and a skilled driver guide.
This specific tour operator picked me up at my Vegas Strip hotel punctually. I knocked back a cupful of robust java, a blueberry muffin, and found my seat.
The luxurious coach was remarkable. The seats were lavish and the window’s had draw-down blinds (convenient for the ride back). Every person had their own A/C, table trays and cup holders. I counted at a minimum seven TVs. Plus I got a pair of headphones for the pre-recorded trip narration.
This is not a short trip. One-way drive time is five-and-a-half-hours. There are several well-timed comfort breaks, in addition to a Hoover Dam photostop (more about this later). Total tour time is approximately 15 hours. I managed to get back to my hotel around 9 p.m.
The route over followed the edge of Lake Mead (sit on the left side). We traversed the Colorado River/Black Canyon using the new Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, which goes up 900 feet over the river. Unlike other tours, ours stopped on the Arizona side for photos of the Dam. Definitely make certain this is a part of your package.
Our bus purred down to Williams, AZ, before switching north for the last 60 miles to the National Park. Here you can prolong your trip by including a South Rim chopper tour. It takes you through the Dragoon Corridor, the widest, deepest section of the canyon.
I stuck with the standard Grand Canyon by bus excursion. Our route took us to Mather Point and Yavapai Observation Center. The views were spectacular. I especially appreciated the vista from Mather. The very first time you see the canyon is truly a spectacular moment. The time I was given at these lookouts was more than enough.
Our driver dropped us off at the Bright Angel Lodge, the hub of the Grand Canyon Village. Plenty to do here. El Tovar Hotel, the Rim Trail, the Bright Angel Trail (takes you under the rim) and the Lodge itself. A box lunch is supplied. More food can be had a the restaurant in the Lodge or at the snack bar near the edge.
I mentioned previously that this canyon bus tour can be had for approximately $80. To get that deal, you have to shop the Internet. You can find several out there. Get the one which offers you up to 3 hours at the South Rim and comes along with all Park fees. I additionally recommend that you book this tour in advance.
This Grand Canyon by bus tour is the best deal around. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. You must be prepared to set aside an entire day to the trip. Departure time is usually around 7 a.m. Return is in the the later part of evening. That might seem like and endurance test but it is not. Buses these days are the height of comfort and ease. No trip to Las Vegas is complete without a trip to the canyon. Make it happen. Take the canyon bus.
